Sustainable Fund Flows just crossed a line.

Sustainable fund flows appear to have reached an inflection point. According to our company research data, global ESG funds recorded approximately $84 billion in net outflows in 2025. This represents the first full calendar year of net redemptions for the asset class and the first annual outflow year for Europe. The contrast with the prior year is notable. In 2024, sustainable funds still attracted around $38 billion in net inflows. The swing from positive to negative flows is therefore not marginal it signals a meaningful shift in investor positioning.

In the fourth quarter of 2025, global sustainable mutual funds and ETFs saw roughly $27 billion in net outflows, an improvement from nearly $55 billions of redemptions in the previous quarter. In Europe specifically, sustainable funds experienced about $20 billion in outflows in Q4, following close to $50 billion in redemptions in Q3. Importantly, a substantial portion of the European outflows appears to have been driven by large UK institutional investors reallocating capital from standard pooled ESG products into bespoke segregated mandates. That suggests implementation changes rather than a wholesale retreat from sustainability.

Several forces may be shaping this shift: performance dispersion relative to traditional benchmarks, regulatory and political debate around ESG classifications, and institutional investors refining how sustainability objectives are integrated within portfolio construction. Flows reflect allocation decisions, not necessarily conviction. The key question is whether 2025 represents a cyclical reset after years of strong growth or a structural recalibration in how sustainable capital is deployed. Sustainable investing may be moving from an expansion phase to a more mature stage one defined less by headline inflows and more by selectivity, scrutiny, and structural integration within institutional portfolios.
